CSA #2, 10¢ light milky blue Stone Y tied manuscript "Glade Springs Va Oct 28" on Emory & Henry College illustrated blue cameo college corner card to "Mr. A. H. Byars, Winchester, Virginia Comp D 1st Regt Va Cavelary (sic) Gen (Fitzhugh) Lees Brigade" in peacock blue ink.. Company D was" Clarke Cavalry" - the regiment fought in over two hundred battles and skirmishes. A. Henderson Byars (1835-1926) enlisted 3-15-62 at age 26 as a private, Abingdon, Va.(was a merchant there postwar). Top back flap missing, a showy and desirable college cover.

CSA #2e, 4-margin 10¢ milky blue Stone Y tied bold blue COLUMBIA/S.C./NOV/19 cds on small commercial cover to "Mrs. E.A. Porcher Care of Dr. Edward Porcher, Mars Bluff, Marion Dist." in neat peacock blue ink script. This choice cover clearly spent time in Europe as it is signed lightly in pencil on the face by both Alberto Diena and Guilio Bolaffi as well as J. M. Bartels on verso. Also light Bolaffi handstamp at bottom left. Extremely Fine.

Dr. Edward Gough Porcher was born June 22, 1839 in South Carolina in the Charleston area (bio accompanies). He enlisted in the CS Army as an Assistant Surgeon and had a variety of assignments from the 15th Battn. SC Hvy Arty to 32nd GA Infty to Surgeon of CS Senate. He died a young man on October 16, 1865 of consumption (tuberculosis).

He owned Cornhill Plantation, a medium-sized plantation with 30 to 50 slaves in Privateer, S.C. where he farmed and practiced medicine. Detailed bio included.

on Overpaid Drop Letter, to Asst. Surgeon Charles Morfit, Richmond, Va. Mofit was an Assistant Surgeon in the Confederate Navy and was at various times assigned to the naval gunboats CSS Ivy, CSS Arkansas and CSS Stono. A copy of a 2002 article in the Confederate Philatelist concerning Morfit and the CSS Ivy is included with the cover. Received docketing at top is in Morfit's own hand.

CSA #2a, lightly pen canceled 4-margin 10¢ light blue Paterson print on folded business letter headed Navasota (Texas) Novb 19, 1862 to "R. C. Campbell, Huntsville, Texas" re freight received by train and plan to ship goods by the next safe stagecoach. The running of the H. & T.C. Railroad to Navasota in 1859 changed a sleepy settlement into a hub of business and economic activity. Navasota became the shipping and cotton-processing center of the region.

CSA #2e, 10¢ milky blue Stone Y, margins all around tied indistinct ___VILLE/VA. cds on cover addressed to "Col. Wm. Preston Johnston, A.D.C., Richmond, Virginia". Johnston was a Yale educated lawyer and the son of Confederate General Albert Sidney Johnston who was killed at the Battle of Shiloh. He served briefly on his father's staff before being appointed personal aide-de-camp on President Jefferson Davis' staff. He was captured with Davis in Georgia at the end of the war and imprisoned at Fort Delaware. In 1866 he was brought by Robert E. Lee to Washington (and Lee) College to teach and was president of Louisiana State University prior to accepting the first presidency of the new Tulane University in 1884. As an old man he wrote, "My heart was buried with the Confederacy. On it will be found engraved at the day of doom, C.S.A." Ex-Bill Bogg (collected Generals). Forthcoming subject of an article in my "Confederate Post" column in The American Stamp Dealer and Collector.

Moses Ashley Curtis who was a preeminent mycologist renowned among botanists as accumulating one of the best ever collection of fungi to this day. Original letter of sympathy from a friend (M. Smith) to both Rev. and Mrs. Curtis, although unsure of whose death. Superb letter and cover.

Haden, 4th Virginia Regiment Heavy Artil. Care of Capt A. Jordan, Richmond". While extremely interesting service records were found for Joel Watkins Haden in Virginia 2nd Cavalry, they do not indicate his service in 4th VA Heavy Artillery. Info included in any case as service records often incomplete or deceiving.

On neat homemade cover addressed to physician "Dr. S. S. Herrick Care Rev W. C. Crane, Jackson, Miss.", which is crossed out and redirected to Vicksburg. Docketing indicating that it was from "Greene near Franklin, La. 1862 Dec 8 - Jan. 7-8". Wonderful cover that was the subject of an article written for The American Stamp Dealer and Collector which may be downloaded in PDF on this website here. Full bio and a copy of article included. Herrick served as an Assistant Surgeon at Mobile Station with the Confederate Navy and most likely in the naval hospital that was located in Mobile.

Susan Fluker, (1823-1906), the daughter of Col. Robert and Susan Kendrick Fluker, were St. Helena pioneers from the State of Georgia. Susan Fluker married Amos Kent, who came from New Hampshire to Louisiana in 1828.

Despite newer technologies, the disruption brought by the Civil War--along with the related closing of the Dahlonega branch of the U.S. Mint--brought the Georgia gold industry nearly to a standstill. In 1829, thousands of "Twenty-Niners" began pouring into north Georgia, seeking their fortunes in the Georgia Gold Rush. After the war, as the region began a slow recovery, there were several sporadic new mining efforts, but these limped along until the large scale revival attempt at the end of the nineteenth century. Mitchel, Savannah, Ga; top back flap missing and tiny edge fault at top of cover, Very Fine. Ex-Wm. A. Fox. William Dixon Mitchell enlisted as a captain on October 1, 1861 in Co. G 19th Georgia Infantry. He was wounded 9-19-63 at Chicamauga, GA, taken prisoner on 12-15-64 at Nashville and released from Johnson's Island on 7-25-63. He rose in the ranks to full colonel by January 19, 1864.

Daniel Philippe Aunspaugh was a tanner and justice of the peace in Liberty (now Bedford) Va. He was married to Mary "Polly" Stone. His papers are at a library at the College of William & Mary.
