Dr.
Edward Gough Porcher was born June 22, 1839 in South
Carolina in the Charleston area (bio accompanies). He enlisted
in the CS Army as an Assistant Surgeon and had a
variety of assignments from the 15th Battn. SC Hvy Arty
to 32nd GA Infty to Surgeon of CS Senate. He died a
young man on October 16, 1865 of consumption (tuberculosis). |

Johnston was a Yale educated lawyer and the son of Confederate
General Albert Sidney Johnston who was killed at the Battle
of Shiloh. He served briefly on his father's staff before
being appointed personal aide-de-camp on President Jefferson
Davis' staff. He was captured with Davis in Georgia
at the end of the war and imprisoned at Fort Delaware.
In 1866 he was brought by Robert E. Lee to Washington (and
Lee) College to teach and was president of Louisiana State
University prior to accepting the first presidency of the
new Tulane University in 1884. As an old man he wrote,
"My heart was buried with the Confederacy. On it will
be found engraved at the day of doom, C.S.A." Ex-Bill
Bogg (collected Generals). Forthcoming subject of an article
in my "Confederate Post" column in The American
Stamp Dealer and Collector. |

by the Civil War--along with the related closing of the Dahlonega
branch of the U.S. Mint--brought the Georgia gold industry
nearly to a standstill. In 1829, thousands of "Twenty-Niners"
began pouring into north Georgia, seeking their fortunes in
the Georgia Gold Rush. After the war, as the region began
a slow recovery, there were several sporadic new mining efforts,
but these limped along until the large scale revival attempt

Samuel Finley Patterson was famous as a financier and business man of unusual capacity. He was Treasurer of the State of North Carolina in 1835, President of the Raleigh and Gaston Railroad in 1839 and Senator 1848-50 among other titles. He was known for much of his life as General Patterson because of his previous appointments, first as brigadier of the militia and then as Major General of the State Militia by the General Assembly during the Civil War. Operating from 1845-1865, the Bingham School at Oaks, NC served as a preparatory school for young men seeking entrance to the University of North Carolina at nearby Chapel Hill, for which reason the Oaks cancellation is considered by many students to be a college postmark. |

James E. Hagood was engaged in the mercantile business until 1856 when he was elected clerk of the circuit court of Pickens District. He served as clerk of the circuit court throughout the period of the Civil War and frequently was called upon to perform services for soldiers who were away in the army and for civilians who were destitute as a result of the war. The Hagood papers are in the University of South Carolina and encompass the war years. Much may be found online about the influential Hagood family. |

To cap off an already nifty cover, it is nicely addressed to “Dr. C. E. Fleming, Surgeon 22nd S.C. Regt. Evans Brigade, Kinston, North Carolina”. His military records show no more than the cover address, but a full unpublished bio is included courtesy of Terry Hambrecht. Records show that while he did attend medical classes, he never received a degree although he did practice medicine.
