CSA #3, 2¢ green tied CHARLESTON / S.C. / JAN / 20 / 186(3) cds on folded business letter, drop use, on blue clipped lined double fold buyer; speaks of buying textiles, raw cotton and expectations of a government rise in prices from Adam to Arch Johnston if Messrs Johnston Cross & Co., Charleston. File fold through top of stamp otherwise Fine and Scarce use. 2009 SCV $2,750.

CSA #3, 2¢ green tied by RICHMOND/ Va. / SEP / 30 / 1862 cds on cover to “Lt. R. C. Byrd, Company E 26th Regt. Va. Vols, Chaffins Bluff, Va.”, Ex-Walske, signed Dietz. Bio of Richard Corbin Byrd included. The Byrd family has a history back to the 1600s and the wife of Capt. Byrd was Ann Gordon, a descendant of John Marshall, Chief Justice of the United States. Capt. Byrd was part of the Army of Northern Virginia and had an significant military career rising from private to full colonel - fought in the trenches of Petersburg and commanded, by then, a small group who surrendered at Appomattox. 2010 SCV $2,750.  $2,500.
