James
Earle Hagood was the son of Col. Benjamin Hagood (1788-1865)
and Adaline Ambler Hagood (1808-1877), born 30 November
1826 in Pickens District. He was engaged in the mercantile
business until 1856 when he was elected clerk of the circuit
court of Pickens District. After the Civil War, Hagood read
law, was admitted to the bar, and from 1868 until 1873 practiced
law in partnership with Joseph J. Norton of Pickens. He
was one of six commissioners appointed in 1868 to select
a site for the present town of Pickens, and between 1869
and 1872 he represented Pickens County in the South Carolina
General Assembly. James E. Hagood was married in 1847 to
Esther ("Essie") Benson Robinson (1829-1889),
and they were the parents of ten children. Hagood served
as clerk of the circuit court throughout the period of the
Civil War and frequently was called upon to perform services
for soldiers who were away in the army and for civilians
who were destitute as a result of the war. The Hagood papers
are in the University of South Carolina and encompass the
war years. |

Hempstead in May 1865. Officers were Charles De Morse (Colonel),

CSA #5, 10¢ rose tied HOLLY SPRINGS / Miss // MAY / 16 [1862] on legal sized envelope to Mrs. Sallie Fleming Broun, Beaver Dam Depot, Hanover Co, Virginia with extraordinary lengthy and insightful original letter from Lt. Col. (Dr.) William Leroy Broun of the C.S. Ordnance Department headed “C.S. Armory, Holly Springs, Miss., May 16, 1862” expressing amazement at being appointed Superintendint of Armories with the title of Major and salary of Colonel (he later got the rank to go with the salary). “The appointment is my highest compliment ever”. Long the subject of controversy about the nature of operations at this site, the Holly Springs, Miss. Confederate States Armory was one of the most mysterious, short-lived facilities operated by the Confederate Government. Established in April 1862, originally the old Jones, McElwaine & Co. factory, it operated only about two months. Documents from this facility thus are extremely rare. On June 6th Memphis was surrendered to Federal forces following a naval battle on the Mississippi River. Holly Springs was occupied by Federal troops June 20th, and the equipment Brown was sending was routed to Atlanta, Ga. Wm. Leroy Brown was later very prominent in the war, becoming in 1865 commander of the C.S. Richmond, Va. Arsenal. Col. Broun made many well known military inventions while in the Ordnance Department. After the war, he continued his illustrious career as an educator in the university system. This cover and letter will be the subject of a forthcoming column in The American Stamp Dealer & Collector. Military and civilian information included with the cover. $800.
