on cover addressed to "J.E. Hagood, Esq., Pickens C.H.,
S.C." with docketing on verso indicating contents were
from "Capt. Moody". 2000 CSA Certificate #3913
James
Earle Hagood was the son of Col. Benjamin Hagood (1788-1865)
and Adaline Ambler Hagood (1808-1877), born 30 November
1826 in Pickens District. He was engaged in the mercantile
business until 1856 when he was elected clerk of the circuit
court of Pickens District. After the Civil War, Hagood read
law, was admitted to the bar, and from 1868 until 1873 practiced
law in partnership with Joseph J. Norton of Pickens. He
was one of six commissioners appointed in 1868 to select
a site for the present town of Pickens, and between 1869
and 1872 he represented Pickens County in the South Carolina
General Assembly. James E. Hagood was married in 1847 to
Esther ("Essie") Benson Robinson (1829-1889),
and they were the parents of ten children. Hagood served
as clerk of the circuit court throughout the period of the
Civil War and frequently was called upon to perform services
for soldiers who were away in the army and for civilians
who were destitute as a result of the war. The Hagood papers
are in the University of South Carolina and encompass the
war years.

cds on homemade cover to "Maj. C. P. Anthony, Richmond,
Virginia, Care of Capt. Tennille, 51st Regt. Ga. Vols."

2, 1863, then promoted to Lieutenant Colonel, 51st Regiment,

1862 until its surrender at Appomattox Court House, except
during Longstreet's 1863 expedition to Georgia and Tennessee.
Upon reaching Virginia, it was assigned to Drayton's Brigade.

assigned to Paul Jones Semmes's Brigade. The subsequent

by blurry bold postmark, possibly that of Huntsville, Texas.
Stamp has vertical preuse crease. Light cover soiling. 1999
CSA Certificate #3561 Genuine, but unable to definitely identify
the postmark. Addressed to "Lt. Col. O.G. Welch, Col.
DeMorse's Regiment, Paris, Texas." Scarce stamp variety
on scarce Texas cover.
Otis
G. Welch - Online research shows the 29th Texas Cavalry
was organized in July 1862; dismounted in February 1865;
surrendered on May 26, 1865; disbanded at Camp Grace near
Hempstead in May 1865. Officers were Charles De Morse (Colonel),
Joseph A. Carroll (Major), and Otis G. Welch (Lieutenant
Colonel). The regiment was assigned to D. H. Cooper's, Bankhead's,
and Gano's Brigade in the Trans-Mississippi Department.
It served in the Indian Territory, fought in Louisiana
and Arkansas, then returned to the Indian Territory.
Otis G. Welch was sometimes known as the "Father
of Denton (Texas)." Although it was established
in 1857 and a courthouse was built on the north side of
the square, Denton (Dallas-Ft. Worth area) was not incorporated
until 1866.

cancel of "Hog Mountain, Ga. 16th July 1862"
on folded letter "to Mr. Joseph E. browne the governor
Milledgeville po of ga" (sic) from Wm H. Deaton was
indicates that he has accepted a commission but there is
an error in the recording of his given name which he asks
to have corrected. There is a William D. Deaton listed in
the 24th Georgia Infantry on 8-24-61 from Gwinnett
County (Hog Mountain location), the only one listed from
that county. Later there is a Wm. H. Deaton listed in the
4th GA State Guard Cavalry (Gower's) which was organized
on July 1, 1863. Light file fold through stamp and a bit
roughly torn at right, but a quite interesting item.
