Inv-4230 |
CSA #7, two singles 5¢ blue tied together by MACON / GA
double circle cancel on blue adversity cover made from
printed County Court form, addressed to "Capt. Geo.
T. Bartlett, Monticello, Georgia via Eatonton". Soldier's
records indicated he enlisted from Jasper County, GA as a
captain on April 25, 1861 into "G" Company Georgia
4th Infantry and resigned the following day. On November 19,
1864 he is listed as forwarded Corps Provost Marshal (no further
record) and as Prisoner-of-War on November 19, 1864
at Monticello, GA. to where this cover is addressed. After
the war he lived in Monticello. Another online source says
"Jasper County, as did other counties in Georgia, furnished
its quota of men and material to the Confederate States Army
during the disastrous Civil War. The first company of volunteers
was organized in 1861 by George T. Bartlett and named the
"Glover Guard" in honor of the company recruited
by Eli Glover during the Creek War. This company became officially
Company "G" of the 4th Regiment, Georgia Infantry,
Army of Northern Virginia C.S.A. and participated in the heavy
fighting of that celebrated Army." He was also listed
as Solicitor General before the War and a Judge of the
Circuit Court after the War, which lends more significance
to the court form used to make the cover. A spiffy item
with an interesting history. |
