CSA #7 - Jefferson Davis, Local (Richmond) Print
Typographed Issue on Cover
New material at the bottom

Inv-4230
CSA #7, two singles 5¢ blue tied together by MACON / GA double circle cancel on blue adversity cover made from printed County Court form, addressed to "Capt. Geo. T. Bartlett, Monticello, Georgia via Eatonton". Soldier's records indicated he enlisted from Jasper County, GA as a captain on April 25, 1861 into "G" Company Georgia 4th Infantry and resigned the following day. On November 19, 1864 he is listed as forwarded Corps Provost Marshal (no further record) and as Prisoner-of-War on November 19, 1864 at Monticello, GA. to where this cover is addressed. After the war he lived in Monticello. Another online source says "Jasper County, as did other counties in Georgia, furnished its quota of men and material to the Confederate States Army during the disastrous Civil War. The first company of volunteers was organized in 1861 by George T. Bartlett and named the "Glover Guard" in honor of the company recruited by Eli Glover during the Creek War. This company became officially Company "G" of the 4th Regiment, Georgia Infantry, Army of Northern Virginia C.S.A. and participated in the heavy fighting of that celebrated Army." He was also listed as Solicitor General before the War and a Judge of the Circuit Court after the War, which lends more significance to the court form used to make the cover. A spiffy item with an interesting history.

CSA #7 horizontal pair tied SAVANNAH / Ga./Paid 1861 on adversity cover made from a form from a Sheriff's Sale/State of Georgia and addressed to "Mrs. W. G. Cade, Elberton, Georgia". This cover has a lot going for it. It is an attractive adversity cover, there is a printing flaw ("third eye") on the upper left stamp on Davis' forehead, and the 1861 year date is clearly incorrect as the stamps weren't even produced until 1862. See the article on this website: William Weaver, Buffalo Forge and Paid Slave Labor; New Earliest Known Usage for Richmond Print - July 25, 1862 for earliest date information. W.G. Cade was in the Georgia Cavalry, 24th Battalion, Co. B. Showy conversation starter!

Greenlee Davidson was a 27 year-old lawyer when he enlisted as Captain 2-17-62. He was killed only a couple months after the posting of this letter on 5-3-63 at Chancellorsville.

Fascinating online source quote: "The most colorful unit in W.R.J. Pegram's battalion, the Letcher Artillery, sprouted into existance during the Spring of 1862. Even though the unit was organized in Richmond, the battery's ranks were filled with men who lived throughout the South. In a disproportionate number, the company attracted recruits from the 'lower walks of life.' In fact, the Letcher Artillery received a steady supply of men from 'Castle Thunder,' a prison for spies, criminals, and deserters. The unit's first captain, Greenlee Davidson, captured the personality of the battery when he wrote in 1862 that "I have a very desperate & unruly set of men." But these delinquent artillerists fought like savages on the battlefield, and their superiors commended their performance at Malvern Hill, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville (where Davidson was killed on May 3, 1863 and succeeded by Thomas A. Brander), Gettysburg, and Reams' Station. One of the battery's officers explained the seemingly paradoxical nature of the Letcher Artillery. he wrote: 'The Meanest Material will stand to their post.'
