About a dozen members of the unit died at Point Lookout, most of whom were taken at Gettysburg in July 1863, but most of the members of Claiborne’s Partisans were captured at Deep Bottom during the final defense of Richmond. US #26, 3¢ brownish carmine tied neat ABINGDON / Va. / MAY / 1861 cds on 7-star patriotic (Dietz type F7-7)to Mr. James S. Greever, Glade Spring Depot, Virginia; 2010 PF Certificate 489719 stating genuine with (very faint) toning at bottom, small part of flap missing. A scarcer design. Although what I found online on Greever refers to him as General, a quick search did not show General of what (not CSA). $1,250.

General James Scott Greever (1837-1895) was educated at Emory and Henry College, and was an honor graduate in the year 1859. When war was declared, he entered the Confederate service as captain of Company A, in the 48th Virginia Infantry. In 1869 he was elected to the Senate from Smyth and Washington counties. General Greever was elected a member of the Board of Trustees of Emory and Henry College in 1875, which place he held until his death. He also served on the Board of Directors of the Southwest Virginia Hospital at Marion. When he died he was president of the Bank of Glade Spring.  He died at his home, "Westview," a fine estate lying along the banks of the Holston river, near Chilhowie, Virginia.
