Hand carried Union patriotic to “Matthias Clark, Hammondsport (NY)” via “Politeness of Capt. King” with matching original letter on red and blue edged patriotic stationery headed “Brick Barracks, Albany June 11/61” saying “Capt. King is going home this P.M. and I concluded to send a line by him. We were examined this A.M. and I pleased without any trouble only three of our men were thrown out. ..It was so hot yesterday that some 15 or 20 of the soldiers were sun-stricken. I believe only one has died…Yesterday they drummed a person out of the Camp for stealing...” and so on. Signed “Sol”.
Solomon B. Clark enlisted on May 22, 1861 into Co. “I”, 34th NY Infantry at Hammondsport, age 26, as a private. He died of wounds on June 1, 1862. Regimental history shows “Fair Oaks battlefield, where it was sent to reinforce General Casey. As soon as it arrived on the field it formed in line of battle and led the advance in a charge that drove the enemy back. It was engaged for nearly three hours, and lost thirty-four killed and sixty-four wounded. On the 1st of June it was again engaged and lost two killed and four wounded.” No doubt Clark was one of those two who died as a result of the Battle of Fair Oaks.Capt. William H. King also enlisted on May 22, 1861 into Co. “I”, 34th NY Infantry at Hammondsport, age 26, as a captain. He resigned on June 1, 1863 at Falmouth, Va. and was commissioned into Veteran Reserve Company on August 11, 1863. He was mustered out on April 19, 1866 with records note “subsequent service in U.S. Army from February 23, 1866 until his death.” Clean cover and letter. Brief soldier bios accompany. A complete regimental history may be found online at New York Military Museum and Research Center website. |
